Tech Recruiter Persona and User Journey Mapping

Mapping the Recruiter Persona and User Jouney was one of the first steps in the design process of a Recruitment and Selection application. I was the Product Designer responsible for designing and conducting the entire research process as well the deliverables.

Context
Startec is a Brazilian startup in the field of Tech Recruitment that has been transforming the experience of connecting companies and people.
In June 2022 I took on a project to design an application for Recruitment and Selection process at Startec Jobs. We realized that we did not have a clear visualization of the Tech Recruiter persona, so I conducted a research to understand:
• User’s Journey
• Context and general information
• Social media of interest
• Interests and motivations
• Goals
• Pain points and frustrations
• Needs, challenges and expectations
Process
A qualitative research was structured and semi-structured interviews were conducted online with recruiters.
Regardless of the context, all research follows these 4 stages:
• Planning
• Conduction
• Analysis
• Dissemination
These 4 steps are necessary so that there are action plans after the research.
Study script
The study script was structured considering 3 main categories:
• Personal informations about the recruiter
• Work routine
• Recruitment process
The questions were formulated thinking about answering mainly the points that there was no certainty about their answers. The script was also validated by the Head of Product.
The interviews were held in a 1:1 format and following a semi-structured logic, that is, the script of questions was followed but as opportunities appeared, other points and “whys” were explored with the users.
Interviews
What people do is different from what people say they do. Because of that, the questions were formulated with the aim of avoiding the most common biases in research:
Data analysis
The individual interview sheets were analyzed in search of patterns that characterize the persona.
The technique applied was to read the sheets with tabulation of the data that were repeated. Then, with the patterns on the table, they were grouped and identified in the categories that best described them.
Based on these insights, it was already possible to visualize for which needs the thought product has more and less fit.
Dissemination
The main deliverables of the survey were the Persona template and User Journey.
There is no need to reinvent the wheel: the tools and templates themselves illustrate the research findings well. Therefore, the main deliverables of the research were:
• Persona template
• User Journey template
In addition, a presentation was made to the Head of Recruitment in order to share insights and deepen some discoveries that were interesting opportunities for the business.
Impact
The main deliverables of the survey were the Persona template and User Journey.
Understanding the interests, needs and challenges of a target audience, in addition to their journey to perform a specific activity, allows all teams to have inputs to better relate and communicate to them.
This mapping brings the user to the center of the sales, marketing, product, and experience processes as improvements and opportunities are discovered.
